Through the US Airways Miles of Hope® program, the flying public may donate Dividend Miles to four national nonprofit organizations: the American Red Cross, Mercy Medical Airlift, Fisher House Foundation and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Donated miles are used to fulfill each organization's mission per the below nonprofit descriptions. More than 600,000,000 miles (12,000 roundtrips) have been donated since the Miles of Hope program began in 1998. Mileage donations are accepted in 1,000 mile increments.
Each year, in communities large and small, victims of some 70,000 disasters turn to neighbors familiar and new—the more than 700,000 volunteers and 34,000 employees of the Red Cross. Through nearly 720 locally supported chapters, more than 15 million people gain the skills they need to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their homes, communities and world. Some 4 million people give blood—the gift of life—through the Red Cross, making it the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The Red Cross helps thousands of U.S. service members separated from their families by military duty stay connected. Donated miles are used to transport disaster relief workers.
Fisher House Foundation is best known for the network of 40 comfort homes on the grounds of military and major Veteran medical centers. The houses are 5,000 to 16,000 square foot homes, with up to 11 suites, donated to the military and VA by the Fisher family of New York through Fisher House. Fisher House provides support to families of patients receiving care at the nearby medical center and has ensured that families of service men and women wounded or injured in the Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom do not pay for their stay at a Fisher House.
Donated miles will be used to reunite families by providing airline tickets to these wounded heroes for a leave or pass from a hospital, or for their families to visit them.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Founded in 1980, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 66 chapters in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes and has granted more than 171,000 wishes in the United States since inception.
Mercy Medical Airlift's mission is to facilitate a charitable means of long distance medical air transport for all medically indigent, low-income and financially vulnerable patients in our society thereby ensuring equal access to distant specialized medical treatment or to appropriate facilities and settings for continuing care.
